Sabbath Is A Gift

Jun 28, 2020    Pastor Karen Taylor    Matthew 11:28-30 MSG

Simply put Sabbath is the day of rest after six days of work.

Sabbath a gift. There is nothing that we have done to earn rest, it was created and given to us.
God gives humanity. God’s image, our identity, instructions and an introduction to our first gift -
rest.

God did all the work and showed us our reflection (His image and our identity (1:27)),
informed humanity of responsibility - be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, subdue it, rule (1:28) and
God speaks of the resources that the land is to humanity (1:30) Then God examples before us
how to live from what God has given & gifted.

Jesus, who is God, reminds us that Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.
(Mark 2:27) and furthermore that He is Lord of the Sabbath (Matt. 12:8; Mark 2:28) and if Lord
then leader/authority.

Jesus answered questions about the Sabbath as He observed the Sabbath in the midst his working, shaping disciples, healing the sick, raising the dead and bring salvation to us all. With all of the eternal good that God the Son did, He like the Father still rested. And Jesus invites us into that rest.

In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I
do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

Sabbath is not a call to be lazy but just the opposite. Sabbath is a call to live in the rhythms of
life with God.
